Reference kit

Brief description of the kit

The Chair in Occupational Health and Safety Management at Université Laval has prepared a kit on employee recognition under the supervision of Professor Jean-Pierre Brun.

The documents included in the kit are part of a knowledge transfer process arising from a variety of research projects and practical workplace experiences. The kit also contains tools for stakeholders in the work world who wish to implement recognition practices within their companies. Some tools were developed in cooperation with Commission de la santé et de la sécurité au travail.

Objectives

The kit is aimed at sensitizing people to the benefits and importance of establishing recognition practices in organizational settings. By providing tools and methods for using recognition, the kit makes a powerful contribution on this important issue. In using it, organization members will help spread awareness of the importance of recognition and become strategic resources who contribute to the development of an organizational culture focused on recognition.

.

Target audience

The kit is designed mainly for the many stakeholders in the workplace, including managers, trade unions, employees, human resource management consultants, and organizational development consultants in private and public firms. It is for people interested in employee recognition and those who wish to develop programs or a culture of recognition within their organizations.

.

Kit contents

The kit includes the following three sections:

1) Sensitization tools

2) Implementation tools

3) Suggested recognition activities

  • Sensitization tools. The first set of tools is designed to help sensitize managers and trade union members to the issue and build awareness of the importance of applying recognition-based management practices every day. The tools will also help stakeholders better understand the positive impact of recognition both on individuals and the organization.

  • Implementation tools. The implementation tools will serve as a guide to managers, stakeholders, and trade unions wishing to establish recognition programs or practices within their organizations. These tools offer hands-on versatility in a wide variety of work environments.

  • Suggested recognition activities. The third section of the kit presents a set of activities for identifying, discovering, and experiencing recognition. The suggested activities are designed mainly for managers and employees. Some activities involve entire work teams, while others focus on individuals. This gives all organization members an opportunity to experience recognition and, in so doing, realize its benefits. Another key aspect of these activities can be to provide employees with the knowledge and ability to develop a culture of recognition in the workplace.

The documents in the kit will help organization members demystify the concepts of employee recognition and provide useful tools for taking action and implementing management practices that foster a philosophy of recognition.
