A survey of library staff shows that musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are very common among library clerks, most of whom are women. Repetitive work, prolonged static postures, the use of computer tools and handling activities are among the causes of these problems. In order to develop an ergonomic intervention model for designing libraries geared as much as possible toward the prevention of MSDs, the researchers will document two elements: (1) work activity and organization in a recently renovated establishment; (2) the issues involved in developing a library (construction and renovation) by examining the projects that are already completed or in progress. The knowledge acquired will make it possible, in a second phase, to implement and assess this model in other work contexts where a service relationship is at the centre of the work.
