Development of a Research Project on Safety Management in SMBs

Researchers: Danièle Champoux (IRSST), Jean-Pierre Brun (U. Laval)

The important role of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in job creation and economic activity has been largely demonstrated. However, these establishments, in particular those employing fewer than 50 workers, often find themselves on their own when it comes to prevention. Occupational health and safety specialists agree on the need to identify methods to help these businesses manage prevention. The study of small businesses that actively manage prevention and the role of inspectors appear to be the most promising research avenues. This project reviews the relevant scientific literature, draws up a statistical overview of prevention management in SMBs, consults key resources and organizations, investigates the possibility of accessing these businesses, and identifies research avenues to obtain the data needed to complete a study.
