Development of a Strategic Approach to the Prevention of Work-Related Mental Health Problems

Researcher: Jean-Pierre Brun (U. Laval)

The multiplication of injuries related to stress, burn-out or other psychological factors attests to the strong increase in work-related mental health problems over the last few years. However, for organizations, the lack of a strategic approach to risk prevention constitutes a sizeable obstacle to this major challenge. The researcher and his team have developed a three-phase approach: Diagnosis, Intervention, and Evaluation. Having completed the first phase, they will now collaborate with organizations to establish a structured program with three objectives: to create a diagnostic tool that organizations can use on their own; to document and improve the prevention approaches to work-related mental health problems; and to develop a strategic prevention approach to this problem. This second phase will help to simplify the research tools needed for organizations, validate a psychosocial-organizational model of the approach, establish the effectiveness indicators of the interventions, document their implementation processes and finalize a strategic approach to mental health in the workplace. This will provide organizations with prevention tools that they can use on their own.
