This project was undertaken to identify the factors underlying the implementation of successful health and safety training programs in the mining sector, and to specifically evaluate a modular miner-training program offered by the joint sector-based association for the mining sector. The first section of the report describes how the extent of employer and worker participation can modify the effectiveness of structured health and safety training, and summarizes the effect of participation-related organizational factors on trainees' ability to correctly apply preventive measures in the workplace.

The study results indicate that the training programs are significantly more likely to be effective in the short term if workers and employers are active participants at all stages (pre-training, training and post-training). The second section of the report consists of an evaluation of the modular miner-training program, and is intended to help program coordinators modify the training programs appropriately. Data was collected on work organization, target clienteles, pedagogy, knowledge assessment, and safety.
